What are Drum Phil's Quick Hits?
When we go to a drum clinic or watch a convention session from PASIC, we usually hear more ideas than we can remember. If we're lucky we remember one concept or tool to work on in the days ahead. And if we don't practice it soon, we'll forget that, too!
Quick Hits are short articles that cover one topic. They usually pertain to playing drums musically and creatively or the logistics of working in a small group. There are plenty of sources out there to help you develop blazing single strokes or play the blushda, so I'll leave those topics to others. Many of the articles directly address jazz drumming. But when you realize that jazz musicians are striving in the moment to contribute creatively to whatever music is happening around them, then these concepts can apply to any musical situation.
If a topic speaks to you, great. Take it to heart and apply it to your practice routine or performance soon, before you forget it. If a subject doesn't connect with you right now, that's okay. Maybe someday down the road you will bump into a musical problem and remember something you read here that just might help. It's okay to come back and read it again. No extra charge.
Keep swinging, and find your happy groove!
