Though a thick maple shell has a lot of potential power, it is rather difficult to play to the limit, because there is always the possibility of only getting a strong attack. It is possible to bring out the power which the shell possesses by applying a precise bearing edge and a thin oil coating.
The lovely dark olive finish may look almost black in photos, so we've added a photo of this drum next to a Black Brass model for comparison.
The wood hoops are very strong, but add less weight than die-cast or heavy flanged hoops. They also give great cross-stick and rimshot sounds. Be aware that the wood hoops add 0.75 inches to this drum's diameter, measured where a flat side is added to assist. It might not sit in a snare basket that is tight on a standard 14-inch drum.
